Some pets can find coming to the vets particularly scary. New smells, an unfamiliar environment, unfamiliar people, a sense of not knowing what’s happening, lots of people and pets coming and going, maybe previous negative associations ….It can all be a bit overwhelming.
Our Registered Veterinary Nurse Amy, who has a passion for and qualifications in canine behaviour assessment and training, is one of the fab nursing team running Happier Vet Visit clinics. Specifically designed to help pets overcome existing anxieties, the clinics use incentivisation, low-stress handling and repetition and familiarisation strategies to build pet confidence and forge positive associations. We work at the pace of the pet with the ultimate goal of routine vet visit success.
This is gorgeous Ruby with Amy at her second Happier Vet Visit clinic. In her first visit, Ruby was very alert and curious, didn’t want to settle and wasn’t keen to take a treat from the nurse but did eat some treats from the floor. A month later, Ruby immediately came up to Amy in the consult room for a fuss! Ruby’s owner brought treats from home which Ruby took really well from Amy (we think she prefers them to ours!), and Ruby seemed much calmer generally, even lying down for a belly rub! What great progress. It’s so heartwarming to watch Ruby’s confidence in practice grow.

This week, in support of May’s Veterinary Nursing Awareness Month, we’re continuing to profile the fab work undertaken by our veterinary nurses at 387 Vets and The West Midlands Cat Clinic.
This is 13 year old Rocky who has been attending mobility clinics here since February. Rocky was enrolled by his owners as he was becoming weaker and uncomfortable on his back legs and they’d noticed he had been finding it difficult to get up the stairs at home. His owners had stopped taking him out for walks before he came to see us as they were worried about Rocky’s ability to get out and about.
Our mobility clinics are run by Paige who holds a Certificate in Canine Mobility Nursing and has been granted a Veterinary Osteoarthritis Alliance Blue Paw Award in recognition of her knowledge and ability to improve osteoarthritis care in veterinary practice. Paige recommended certain lifestyle changes that could be implemented at home to support Rocky, as well as adapting his exercise routine and reviewing his diet. Staying in shape is important as excess body fat not only increases pressure placed on the body’s joints, but joints are also at increased risk of inflammatory response.
With careful control of daily calorie intake, joint supplements and a tailored exercise programme, Rocky is back to enjoying dog walks, has lost 1.2kg and seems generally happier and brighter all round. At his latest appointment, Rocky’s owner reported having had to move out of the way at home as Rocky raced past him up the stairs! Paige was so proud of Rocky’s progress and improvement, that she almost cried!

Did you know that 387 Veterinary Centre is a Bee Friendly Practice with The British Bee Veterinary Association? Members of the scheme are encouraged to plant thoughtfully on their premises to help sustain visiting bees. We are currently replanting lavender around our carpark and have created a roof terrace garden with heathers, a variety of herbs and a bed of wildflowers (currently in seedling form) to provide a prolonged period of feeding opportunity for pollinators. And every year, we supply team with sunflower seeds to plant at home, to give bees something yummy to enjoy further afield.
This year, we’d love you to join us in planting sunflowers in your gardens so together, as a 387 community, we can have an even wider impact. To support this, we’ve made up 80 packs with sunflower seeds and planting instructions, available free from our reception desks. Please do pick up an envelope if you fancy getting involved, but be quick as once they are gone, they’re gone! The reward is big smiley sunflowers at the end of the summer, and knowing that you’re helping to provide much needed nutrition for a range of insects – pollinators we rely on for much of our food.

Our consulting nurses possess a huge bank of knowledge to be able to provide current, informed advice and support to you and your pets. Not only do they help owners give pets the best start in life, they advise on a whole range of preventative care for happy, healthy pets long-term, administer a range of treatments, assess recovery progress and health status, triage injuries and recognise when it’s best for a pet to be referred to a vet.
Weight checks, flea and worming checks, anal glands release, post op checks, dressing changes, laser therapy, stitch removal, nail clips, tick removal, second vaccinations, microchipping, blood pressure checks, eye cleaning, arthritis injections, end of life discussion and bereavement support … these are just some of the standard appointments our nurses have seen in the past week.
Our Registered Veterinary Nurse Charlotte completed a Veterinary Nursing Consulting Certificate last year and loves sharing course learning around preventative care and chronic and acute conditions on her consulting days. Based in our cat clinic yesterday, Charlotte’s consultations included feline nutrition advice and general health checks, assessing patient response to mobility-improving medication and administering injections and carrying out cat nail clips.
Here she is trimming guinea pig claws – a particular highlight as most of our visitors are cats and dogs!

Our team love celebrating the highs of pet ownership, but are also very aware that there will be times when comfort and compassion is a priority, not least when beloved pet companions reach end of life. We appreciate how much it matters that any requests relating to pet cremation, ashes return and memento choices are carried out correctly. To support this, our Registered Veterinary Nurse Mia has streamlined our deceased pet protocols, and is primary team member in charge of cross-referencing and checking records and paperwork before deceased pets leave practice for the pet crematorium. Thank you, Mia, for taking on this important responsibility, and for the care and compassion you show deceased pets making their final journey.
