As a Bee Friendly Practice, earlier in the year, we gave away sunflower seeds for pet owners to plant at home to help feed the bees and other pollinators and wildlife this summer. You can imagine how delighted we were to receive this fabulous photo of some of our sunflower seeds all grown up! In this hot weather – and with our fifth heatwave on the horizon – insects and wildlife are struggling to stay hydrated. Putting out a shallow dish with water and protruding pebbles or rocks that insects can use as a landing station from which to drink could be just the life-saving hydration station they need. We were very sad to say goodbye to Sian on Friday. Sian has been at 387 Veterinary Centre & The West Midlands Cat Clinic as a student veterinary nurse for the past 3 years and we have loved supporting her through her Level 3 Veterinary Nursing Diploma and watching her skills and confidence grow. We were delighted for her when she passed her qualification in May. Unfortunately we don’t currently have the capacity to take on an additional qualified veterinary nurse which has meant that Sian has had to look for her first qualified veterinary nursing position elsewhere. We are sure she will be a huge success in her new job which she starts today! Thank you, Sian, for all your hard work and investment in the practice. We look forward to hearing how your first week has gone when we meet up with you on Saturday for a team evening out!

We’re delighted to welcome Amy Hardy who joined the 387 team as a new student nurse just last week. Amy is no stranger to the veterinary industry. Her previous job was working for five years as a veterinary receptionist in small animal practice in the West Midlands. Great with client care, Amy also loved meeting everyone’s pets and, looking to expand her skills portfolio, was keen to move into nursing, helping and observing the nursing team as much as she could. Amy’s passion and determination to become a veterinary nurse was clear at her interview for our student nurse vacancy and she’s already doing a brilliant job on wards. She’ll soon be starting to help on reception on Saturdays and at other times as needed, so do say hello when you’re next in!

With temperatures set to reach record highs this week, trying to keep our pets cool and hydrated is more important than ever. Make sure you leave lots of fresh water stations around the house. Popping ice cubes into water bowls will keep water cooler for longer. Ensure pets have access to shade and cooler spots at all times, and if there’s any chance of a gentle breeze, even better. Indoor fan sales this week must be through the roof! A special shout out to bunnies with this being Rabbit Awareness Week. Keep hutches out of the sun, ensure runs have shade, wipe the tips of your rabbit’s ears to help them cool down, and pop a frozen bottle of water wrapped in a tea towel into their living space so they can choose to lie against it should they wish. Keep water for their water bottles in the fridge – or even freeze them – for a cool refreshing drink.

Veterinary Nursing Awareness Month (which we’re rolling into June), isn’t just about celebrating the role of qualified nurses. It’s also about raising awareness around what the job can entail and championing students currently working towards a career in veterinary nursing. Our student nurse Isobel initially started at 387 Vets volunteering for a day a week whilst studying for an Animal Management Diploma to gain course-required practical experience in an animal-related environment. Three years later, she has just completed the second year of her Level 3 Veterinary Nursing Diploma and, after the summer, will be starting to prepare for her oral Professional Discussion with an industry panel and final practical examinations (OSCEs) to become a Registered Veterinary Nurse! What have been the highlights so far?
“I loved starting in kennels and on cat ward to really get to know the inpatient role properly before moving into other areas in practice. I have had lots of opportunity to take clinics and feel competent running nurse consults. Learning anaesthetics under supervision has been really interesting, and I particularly love seeing pets going through the whole journey now from admit to discharge, and being an active part in it all. It’s like piecing the whole jigsaw together.”
