Good luck Sian!

Good luck Sian!

Sian leaver 1024x724 1 | Good luck Sian! | We were very sad to say goodbye to Sian on Friday. Sian has been at 387 Veterinary Centre & The West Midlands Cat Clinic as a student veterinary nurse for the past 3 years and we have loved supporting her through her Level 3 Veterinary Nursing Diploma and watching her skills and confidence grow. We were delighted for her when she passed her qualification in May. Unfortunately we don’t currently have the capacity to take on an additional qualified veterinary nurse which has meant that Sian has had to look for her first qualified veterinary nursing position elsewhere. We are sure she will be a huge success in her new job which she starts today! Thank you, Sian, for all your hard work and investment in the practice. We look forward to hearing how your first week has gone when we meet up with you on Saturday for a team evening out! | Wellcare World | cat

Back from World Congress

ISFM 26 1 | Back from World Congress | Last week, our Registered Veterinary Nurse Rachael and our vet Emma attended the International Cat Care’s World Feline Congress at the International Convention Centre in Cardiff. The annual event brings together clinicians from across the globe for three days of world class feline learning from a host of international speakers. Topics this year included gastrointestinal disease, cardiology and respiratory disease. As well as attending lectures on improving cats’ physical and emotional care, congress gives practitioners the chance to meet and chat with a wide range of exhibitors and to network with like-minded attendees. Here are Rachael and Emma grabbing a photo with congress speaker and renowned cat vet Dr Petra Černá. We can’t wait to hear all about the trip! | Wellcare World | cat

Pet peace of mind

As pet owners, we know how enriching pets can be to our daily life. However, when our pets fall ill, it’s a real worry. Having pet insurance means that finance doesn’t become the primary concern around treatment options. It’s something all veterinary practices recommend to give owners peace of mind that they can afford unexpected veterinary care their pet might need on their life journey.

Interestingly, whilst we often tend to think of having insurance in case of accidents and emergencies, insurance provider Petplan reports that 90% of claims are for pet illness rather than accident: indeed, many insurance claims at 387 Vets are for chronic life-long illnesses that require pets to have monthly medications and regular health reviews.

We are incredibly grateful to our RVN Sharon who, in addition to her other veterinary nursing responsibilities, handles the majority of insurance claim processing for pets registered at 387 Vets. It’s a really important responsibility and, with a single claim taking anywhere between 15 and 45 minutes to process, Sharon has ring-fenced time off rota each week specifically dedicated to managing pet insurance. Can you believe, in 2025, a staggering 1500 pet insurance claims were processed at 387 Vets! Thank you, Sharon for the amazing job you do.

If your pet is under 18 months of age, and you’re interested in accessing 4 weeks’ free pet insurance, please give us a call on 01922 411755.

Facilitating faster results

RL | Facilitating faster results | In addition to carrying out a full portfolio of nursing responsibilities, our Registered Veterinary Nurse Rachael also holds the responsibility of Lab Supervisor in practice. If your pet has had blood or urine tests with us, and these have been processed on site, you’ll appreciate the speed with which samples have been analysed, results shared and any necessary treatment commenced. Rachael has the important role of ensuring everything is in place to make this happen.  | Wellcare World | cat

Lab Supervisor responsibilities include quality checks on equipment, troubleshooting any technical issues and liaising with supplier support teams, maintaining slide and cassette stock, ensuring lab hygiene levels are maintained, allocating results to patient records, training new team on how to use our machines … and more!

With new analyser machines installed last year at the culmination of our internal expansion project, we’re able to run an even wider profile of blood and urine tests in house, so Rachael’s role is more important than ever in helping pets and their owners to get speedy results!

Approaching qualification

IP | Approaching qualification | Veterinary Nursing Awareness Month (which we’re rolling into June), isn’t just about celebrating the role of qualified nurses. It’s also about raising awareness around what the job can entail and championing students currently working towards a career in veterinary nursing.  Our student nurse Isobel initially started at 387 Vets volunteering for a day a week whilst studying for an Animal Management Diploma to gain course-required practical experience in an animal-related environment. Three years later, she has just completed the second year of her Level 3 Veterinary Nursing Diploma and, after the summer, will be starting to prepare for her oral Professional Discussion with an industry panel and final practical examinations (OSCEs) to become a Registered Veterinary Nurse! What have been the highlights so far? | Wellcare World | cat

What have been the highlights so far?

“I loved starting in kennels and on cat ward to really get to know the inpatient role properly before moving into other areas in practice. I have had lots of opportunity to take clinics and feel competent running nurse consults. Learning anaesthetics under supervision has been really interesting, and I particularly love seeing pets going through the whole journey now from admit to discharge, and being an active part in it all. It’s like piecing the whole jigsaw together.”

The time has flown! We look forward to supporting Isobel in the exciting months aheads!
