Our consulting nurses possess a huge bank of knowledge to be able to provide current, informed advice and support to you and your pets. Not only do they help owners give pets the best start in life, they advise on a whole range of preventative care for happy, healthy pets long-term, administer a range of treatments, assess recovery progress and health status, triage injuries and recognise when it’s best for a pet to be referred to a vet.
Weight checks, flea and worming checks, anal glands release, post op checks, dressing changes, laser therapy, stitch removal, nail clips, tick removal, second vaccinations, microchipping, blood pressure checks, eye cleaning, arthritis injections, end of life discussion and bereavement support … these are just some of the standard appointments our nurses have seen in the past week.
Our Registered Veterinary Nurse Charlotte completed a Veterinary Nursing Consulting Certificate last year and loves sharing course learning around preventative care and chronic and acute conditions on her consulting days. Based in our cat clinic yesterday, Charlotte’s consultations included feline nutrition advice and general health checks, assessing patient response to mobility-improving medication and administering injections and carrying out cat nail clips.
Here she is trimming guinea pig claws – a particular highlight as most of our visitors are cats and dogs!

Our team love celebrating the highs of pet ownership, but are also very aware that there will be times when comfort and compassion is a priority, not least when beloved pet companions reach end of life. We appreciate how much it matters that any requests relating to pet cremation, ashes return and memento choices are carried out correctly. To support this, our Registered Veterinary Nurse Mia has streamlined our deceased pet protocols, and is primary team member in charge of cross-referencing and checking records and paperwork before deceased pets leave practice for the pet crematorium. Thank you, Mia, for taking on this important responsibility, and for the care and compassion you show deceased pets making their final journey.

Holder of a Certificate in Emergency and Critical Care, our Registered Veterinary Nurse Lauren particularly enjoys theatre nursing and spends, on average, 75% of her working week on theatre rotation. Who better to champion the role of the theatre nurse at 387 Vets during Veterinary Nursing Awareness Month!
Theatre nurses have the really important job of looking after patient comfort and safety during procedures, as well as helping the ops list to run smoothly. This means that, in addition to ensuring theatres are fully equipped and all machines are fully functioning, theatre nurses will take and run any requested pre-op bloods to check the op is safe to proceed, prep pre-op meds and pain relief under vet supervision, clip and clean the surgical operating site for op sterility, place catheters ahead of ops for easy meds delivery in case of emergency and monitor and record patient stats to check patient safety throughout.
This is Lauren monitoring patient stats on our multi parameter machine. She’s checking blood oxygen levels, carbon dioxide exhaled, pulse rate, blood pressure and number of breaths per minute as well as listening to the patient’s heart under anaesthesia, whilst assessing other indicators and factors to ensure the patient is safely controlled. Should any readings or observations concern her, she’s ready to respond.
We’re proud to have a fabulous team of qualified and experienced nurses monitoring every operation we carry out in practice, helping to keep your fur babies safe.

This year, both 387 Veterinary Centre and The West Midlands Cat Clinic are due to go through re-accreditation for our Cat Friendly Clinic Status and, once again, we’re aiming for gold! The process involves evidencing how we help to minimise feline stress in practice and in and around veterinary visits.
Part of the accreditation involves all clinical team completing a certain amount of feline-specific training including appropriate response to feline behaviours exhibited in practice.
Some of us have already accessed Feliway’s Cat Handling Programme, a practitioner training resource created by Ceva and International Cat Care. We were super-excited to see The West Midlands Cat Clinic featured throughout the set of online learning modules, demonstrating exemplar practice. Check out these stills to spot a few familiar faces too!
