Conditions like diabetes, thyroid trouble and heart and kidney disease are more common in older cats but can be difficult to spot early-on. At our senior cat clinic, we’ll chat to you about your senior superstar’s lifestyle, habits and behaviours and run blood profiling, blood pressure monitoring and urine analysis to screen for common age-related illness indicators. When you collect your feline friend a bit later in the day, you’ll have a 30-minute discharge appointment with a vet, where your feline friend will have a full vet health check and our vet will chat to you about any findings and recommendations from your’s cat’s visit. You’ll get a copy of your cat’s health assessment to take home.
Just like an MOT, we recommend annual attendance at senior cat clinics for cats over 10 years old to help keep your feline friend in the best of health. Many of you will have recognised a familiar face back on the 387 and West Midlands Cat Clinic Team! We were delighted to welcome Alanna Ankcorn back in January as a Registered Veterinary Nurse, taking our Registered Veterinary Nursing team to a new total of 10. Alanna first came to 387 Vets in January 2019 on a 3-year Student Veterinary Nurse contract in order to undertake her Level 3 Veterinary Nursing Diploma. Since qualification in 2022, Alanna has gained a huge diversity of nursing experience, working in small animal veterinary nursing most recently as a locum nurse. Positions have included small animal general practice, day and night work in veterinary hospital and referral centre nursing, and not just locally but country-wide. Keen to settle back into a permanent nursing position, Alanna applied for our recent RVN vacancy, and started back with us almost 6 years to the day she arrived as a student nurse! Super proactive, she’s hit the ground running and is already keen to start nutrition ambassador training, clinical coaching training and is a member of our practice eco team. It’s lovely to have you back, Alanna.

A big high five to beautiful Summer who came in to stay with us yesterday morning for a procedure and brought her special teddy with her. Summer has had teddy since birth and both are now 7 years old! She carried her friend around with her whenever she needed to move from her kennel, and had the waggiest tail whenever teddy was near. Happy, happy dog! True best friends!

Many of you who have been into practice over the last month will have been invited to complete a customer satisfaction survey for our governing body, The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS). Huge thanks to those of you who have participated. Your responses form contributing evidence towards our application for an additional RCVS Client Service Award. We have already submitted a large bank of evidence for review. On Wednesday, we have site visit from an official assessor who will be coming in to chat to team and see our practices and protocols first hand. We are keeping all fingers and toes crossed for a great result!
Additional RCVS Awards allow any practice accredited through the RCVS Practice Standards Scheme to demonstrate how their practice excels in specialist areas. There are 9 additional awards. We are currently applying for Client Service and Team and Professional Responsibility.
The Practice Standards Scheme is a great initiative to help teams run veterinary practices to the highest standards of veterinary care. Choosing an RCVS-accredited practice for your pet gives you the reassurance that your furry friend is in great hands. RCVS practices are rigorously assessed every 4 years to ensure standards are maintained. 387 Veterinary Centre has been an RCVS accredited practice since 2009.
These two additional RCVS awards will enable us to show our governing body how much we’ve invested in our service provision, clinical excellence, team training and customer care over and above their standard framework recommendations.

We very sadly said goodbye to our student nurse Amy Mothershaw on Friday. Amy has been with 387 Vets and The West Midlands Cat Clinic since 2021. We remember carrying out her interview on zoom, back in the days when we weren’t allowed to admit clients into practice. Amy has spent the last three years working on her Level 3 Veterinary Nursing Diploma, spending one day a week at college whilst working at the practice. We have loved watching her skills develop and she has excelled in all her qualification exams to date. Just the final practical exam results to come but we have no doubt that Amy will have aced them! Thank you very much for all your hard work during your apprenticeship with us, Amy. We wish you happiness and success in your new job, and look forward to hearing all about your first position as a Registered Veterinary Nurse!
