Our Registered Veterinary Nurse Mia was in Birmingham on Saturday, broadening her rabbit knowledge at the Rabbit Welfare Association & Fund’s 2026 Rabbit Health & Welfare Forum. Mia was one of only a handful of qualified nurses as most delegates were vets, and many clinical attendees were from specialist referral centres so we’re super excited that Mia went! Topics included emergency protocols for rabbit anaesthesia, best practices for pain management, diagnostics and drugs for older rabbits, critical care guidance and specifics on rabbit dentistry, all delivered by industry professionals renowned for their rabbit knowledge and expertise. During the day, delegates also had the opportunity to network, engage in Q&A sessions and chat to exhibitors. Mia has returned from the forum full of useful information, new ideas and great resources – and a new bunny teddy too! We can’t wait to hear in more detail all about her day!

As pet owners, we know how enriching pets can be to our daily life. However, when our pets fall ill, it’s a real worry. Having pet insurance means that finance doesn’t become the primary concern around treatment options. It’s something all veterinary practices recommend to give owners peace of mind that they can afford unexpected veterinary care their pet might need on their life journey.
Interestingly, whilst we often tend to think of having insurance in case of accidents and emergencies, insurance provider Petplan reports that 90% of claims are for pet illness rather than accident: indeed, many insurance claims at 387 Vets are for chronic life-long illnesses that require pets to have monthly medications and regular health reviews.
We are incredibly grateful to our RVN Sharon who, in addition to her other veterinary nursing responsibilities, handles the majority of insurance claim processing for pets registered at 387 Vets. It’s a really important responsibility and, with a single claim taking anywhere between 15 and 45 minutes to process, Sharon has ring-fenced time off rota each week specifically dedicated to managing pet insurance. Can you believe, in 2025, a staggering 1500 pet insurance claims were processed at 387 Vets! Thank you, Sharon for the amazing job you do.
If your pet is under 18 months of age, and you’re interested in accessing 4 weeks’ free pet insurance, please give us a call on 01922 411755.

Dental health checks are just as important in pets as they are in humans. They can identify existing problems owners may be unaware about that need addressing as pets can be very good at hiding pain. They are also really useful for catching dental and periodontal disease early to prevent continuing deterioration. Did you know that we now run nurse-led dental clinics specifically to assess pet dental and oral health and to give advice on dental home care for happy healthy pet smiles?
At 387 Vets and The West Midlands Cat Clinic, we have a Tooth Fairy Team who are super passionate about pet dental care. The team includes several Registered Veterinary Nurses, trained to carry out dental scale and polishes to support good pet dental health. This is Alanna carrying out a scale and polish on gorgeous 10 year old cockapoo Sidney who was suffering from early onset gum disease. Plaque and tartar build up is a common cause of this condition (known as gingivitis), where gums become irritated and red, can exhibit swelling and even bleed. Scaling and polishing cleans the teeth and removing the trigger.
If you think your pet would benefit from a dental health check, please give us a ring on 01922 411755.

Our Registered Veterinary Nurse Charlotte completed a Veterinary Nursing Consulting Certificate last year and loves sharing course learning around preventative care and chronic and acute conditions on her consulting days. Based in our cat clinic yesterday, Charlotte’s consultations included feline nutrition advice and general health checks, assessing patient response to mobility-improving medication and administering injections and carrying out cat nail clips.
Here she is trimming guinea pig claws – a particular highlight as most of our visitors are cats and dogs!
