Did you know that, as part of their course, vet students need to complete a minimum of 30 weeks’ experience in veterinary practice in their holidays as part of their degree requirement? At 387 Vets and The West Midlands Cat Clinic, we enjoy welcoming vet students at different stages in their learning into practice, to help enhance their clinical skills and knowledge on placement. This is Sophie-Zara, a third year student at Harper-Keele, who has been with us for the past fortnight. As well as observing surgical procedures and vet consultations, Sophie-Zara set herself some practical objectives to complete, all of which she achieved. This was Sophie-Zara helping carry out a male neutering procedure under vet guidance and supervision, an extra to her objective list so exciting to undertake and she did a great job! We look forward to welcoming Sophie-Zara back in September and to hearing how she’s been progressing!

A big shout out to our Registered Veterinary Nurse Paige who is currently looking after these two tiny house guests. The kittens were found on a farm having been abandoned by mum and were brought in to the practice yesterday. They are still so young that they have yet to open their eyes but they are super strong and are happy to let us know when they are hungry! They need very regular bottle feeding which we’ll all be helping out with during work hours. Paige has volunteered to be mum overnight and this weekend until the babies go into longer term foster care with cat charity Voices 4 Cats on Monday. We wonder if they’ll open their eyes before the weekend is out! The kittens will be in excellent hands and we look forward to hearing how they get on!

A big shout out to Hamish, Paige and Emma who are currently at the London Vet Show. Hot on the heels of the Investors in People Awards on Wednesday night, the three headed to ExCeL first thing on Thursday morning for the two-day veterinary congress. A highlight on the professional development calendar, this year, London Vet Show has an incredible 29 dedicated training areas delivering a huge diversity of sessions on the latest in veterinary thinking from world-class speakers in their field. We look forward to hearing all about congress next week, and finding out what golden nuggets of clinical knowledge and practical skill we can implement here at 387 Vets & The West Midlands Cat Clinic to keep driving our standards of care forwards.

It’s here! International Cat Day is recognised every year on 8th August and this year the theme is ‘Celebrating Cats’ – no better reason to take some time out today to lavish extra attention on your favourite feline! It’s also the perfect day to spend a few moments considering how our cats make life that little bit better, whether it be through companionship, how they make us smile, the joy of hearing them purr or simply how cute they look when they are all curled up sleeping!
The charity International Cat Care, custodians of the event, are championing the day to bring cat advocates together to share their love of cats. We’d love to hear what you most love about your feline friend!

We very sadly said goodbye to our student nurse Amy Mothershaw on Friday. Amy has been with 387 Vets and The West Midlands Cat Clinic since 2021. We remember carrying out her interview on zoom, back in the days when we weren’t allowed to admit clients into practice. Amy has spent the last three years working on her Level 3 Veterinary Nursing Diploma, spending one day a week at college whilst working at the practice. We have loved watching her skills develop and she has excelled in all her qualification exams to date. Just the final practical exam results to come but we have no doubt that Amy will have aced them! Thank you very much for all your hard work during your apprenticeship with us, Amy. We wish you happiness and success in your new job, and look forward to hearing all about your first position as a Registered Veterinary Nurse!
