Today is our receptionist Laura’s last day in practice before she moves on to pastures new. We will be very sad to say goodbye from a team perspective, and know that she will be missed by pet owners for her lovely rapport and by canine visitors for her doggie cuddles! We all gathered for a pizza-themed long lunch in practice to wish Laura well, with our two new mummies Charlotte and Mia coming in specially too. We look forward to keeping in touch with Laura and to hearing what life holds next!

This is our new RVN Rachael during her cat clinic nursing consults this morning giving beautiful Ghost a cuddle. Rachael joined us at the beginning of March (with the expansion of our premises, we’ve been expanding our team too!) and takes our qualified nursing team to a new total of 12. Rachael started her nursing journey in 2012, and on qualifying as a Registered Veterinary Nurse in 2017, moved to the Midlands where she has been working in small animal first opinion practice since. In addition to her nursing duties and being sole charge nurse at branch surgery level, Rachael helped inspire vet team members of the future in previous posts, as a student nurse clinical coach and work experience coordinator. Whilst she enjoys all elements of her role, she has a particular passion for feline nursing, recently completing an ISFM Certificate in Feline Nursing with distinction and helping her previous practice become a silver-accredited Cat Friendly Clinic. We’re delighted to welcome Rachael to the team and know she will love meeting you, your feline friends and canine pals too!

This is Cola having extra special cuddles today pre-op. She is practice manager Rachel and our vet Hamish’s cocker spaniel and is in for lip fold surgery. Cocker spaniels can be particularly prone to lower lip infection as they have an excess of skin that folds in on itself, trapping moisture and bacteria, causing this area to become sore and smelly. Whilst this can be managed in many cases with medicated wipes and a barrier cream, as soon as Hamish stopped using this treatment method on Cola, her problem returned. The best solution for Cola is to have the excess fold of skin removed to prevent ongoing bacterial build up and discomfort.
If you notice your dog is smelly around their mouth, please do get this checked out. Whilst it could be an easily treatable lip fold issue, an unpleasant smell can also be a symptom of dental disease. Taking action will help your dog to feel happier and healthier, and means doggy cuddles will be extra lovely without a smelly doggy mouth!

Many of you will have recognised a familiar face back on the 387 and West Midlands Cat Clinic Team! We were delighted to welcome Alanna Ankcorn back in January as a Registered Veterinary Nurse, taking our Registered Veterinary Nursing team to a new total of 10. Alanna first came to 387 Vets in January 2019 on a 3-year Student Veterinary Nurse contract in order to undertake her Level 3 Veterinary Nursing Diploma. Since qualification in 2022, Alanna has gained a huge diversity of nursing experience, working in small animal veterinary nursing most recently as a locum nurse. Positions have included small animal general practice, day and night work in veterinary hospital and referral centre nursing, and not just locally but country-wide. Keen to settle back into a permanent nursing position, Alanna applied for our recent RVN vacancy, and started back with us almost 6 years to the day she arrived as a student nurse! Super proactive, she’s hit the ground running and is already keen to start nutrition ambassador training, clinical coaching training and is a member of our practice eco team. It’s lovely to have you back, Alanna.
