Welcome to the team!

Emma K 387 | Welcome to the team! | Many of you will have met our new veterinary receptionist Emma Kiejda who started with us this June. No stranger to veterinary practice, Emma has a diverse range of industry-related experience. She started out as a Veterinary Care Assistant at the age of 18, using her VCA qualification to support in-patient care. She later moved into a purely customer-facing role as a veterinary receptionist and, after a two year hiatus as an audit coordinator for a pharmaceutical stock taking company, is back in small animal practice – this time with us! Emma thrives on multi-tasking, loves working with people and pets and has a great understanding of front of house activity as well as a useful knowledge of more clinical elements of practice life. She also comes highly recommended by our nurse Rachael Leonard as they used to work together before coming here! We’re delighted to welcome Emma to the 387 Vets & West Midlands Cat Clinic team! | Wellcare World | skin

With the 10-day forecast showing lovely sunshine ahead, it’s a great opportunity for you and your pets to enjoy the great outdoors! Do, however, bear in mind that our furry friends may need a bit of extra consideration at this time to ensure they stay happy and healthy in this late-Spring warmth.

Even if it doesn’t feel truly summery yet, it’s important not to leave dogs unattended in cars in warm weather. A pleasant temperature outside can still create an oven environment in the car. Conservatories can be hot-house danger zones too. Give pets the opportunity to move away from sunshine and heat and to rest in a cooler environment should they choose. Cats will love shady spots in the garden which you can create simply by putting out a chair or your patio furniture, or by introducing pet-friendly shade-casting shrubs. If you have small furries in outdoor hutches, consider how the sun moves during the course of the day, so there’s no point at which they’ll be in full glare.

Hydration is important as the weather warms up. Putting out extra bowls with fresh water means your pets will never be too far from a hydration station at home.

And if you feel you need to apply suncream, consider whether your pets need protection too. Hairless breeds and white-furred dogs and cats are prime candidates for sunburn where there is exposed skin. Avoid by applying pet-friendly sunscreen appropriately, and remember the tips of the ears!

Hoping you and pets make the most of the wonderful May sunshine!

All better soon

All better soon

Cola surgery 1024x807 1 | All better soon | This is Cola having extra special cuddles today pre-op. She is practice manager Rachel and our vet Hamish’s cocker spaniel and is in for lip fold surgery. Cocker spaniels can be particularly prone to lower lip infection as they have an excess of skin that folds in on itself, trapping moisture and bacteria, causing this area to become sore and smelly. Whilst this can be managed in many cases with medicated wipes and a barrier cream, as soon as Hamish stopped using this treatment method on Cola, her problem returned. The best solution for Cola is to have the excess fold of skin removed to prevent ongoing bacterial build up and discomfort.  | Wellcare World | skin

If you notice your dog is smelly around their mouth, please do get this checked out. Whilst it could be an easily treatable lip fold issue, an unpleasant smell can also be a symptom of dental disease. Taking action will help your dog to feel happier and healthier, and means doggy cuddles will be extra lovely without a smelly doggy mouth!
