Many thanks to those of you who have been visiting 387 Vets this week for your patience. Whilst our car park and West Midlands Cat Clinic access is still open, we have had to lock the passageway from the car park to our 387 reception due to a drain blockage.

If the passageway gates are still locked when you visit, please can you make your way to our 387 reception by returning to the car park and following the public footpath round by the road.

Severn Trent were on site yesterday and have booked an emergency crew to come out at some point today to further attend to the issue. We hope all will return to normal very soon!

Passionate about canine in-patient wellbeing

Passionate about canine in-patient wellbeing

Bez 1024x768 1 | Passionate about canine in-patient wellbeing | As an accredited Dog Friendly Clinic with Dogs Trust and The British Veterinary Behaviour Association, we’re super keen to help make in-patient visits as stress-minimal as possible. We phone owners ahead of patient admit to go through a care plan which includes questions about pet preferences and behaviours so that we can adapt care in practice accordingly. We ask that pets bring items from home with them for comfort and the familiar smell of home. A favourite blanket and teddy is perfect. We’ll also ask if owners can provide a portion of their dog’s favourite food for post procedure. Whilst we’re happy to provide food, we find pets often prefer what they and their tummy are used to. We have raised water bowls for bigger breeds and older pets. | Wellcare World | WHO

In kennels, we make sure patient spaces are comfy and cosy. We drape towels over the front half of the kennel door too. Whist no kennel faces any other, this gives patients an extra sense of security if they want to tuck themselves away. We have three walk-in kennels on ward in addition to a host of other kennels to accommodate larger breeds, as well as a completely separate walk-in isolation kennel which we use for especially anxious patients, as well as medical cases warranting separation. We play gentle soothing music on ward and we keep treats and licki mats to hand for encouragement where some form of food is allowed.

We have a secure, enclosed toileting area directly off kennels. We have a patch of astro turf in our run for dogs who prefer to toilet on grass. If dogs like to potter before toileting, no problem. If they like company, that’s no problem too! We have dedicated kennels nurses specifically responsible for in-patient care and comfort.

Here are gorgeous Bez and Jasper beautifully modelling a few of our Dog Friendly Clinic inpatient initiatives. Both brought their teddies who were also given a health check during their stay!

High praise from Royal College Assessor

Small Animal Practice colour | High praise from Royal College Assessor | We are delighted to report that we have passed our 2025 Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) Practice Standards Scheme Assessment. The RCVS are the regulatory body for veterinary surgeons and registered veterinary nurses in the UK. Whilst their Practice Standards Scheme (PSS) is voluntary, the comprehensive framework helps drive improvement and makes practices accountable for service standards. Practices displaying the RCVS logo meet rigorous RCVS-set standards, giving owners peace of mind around their pet’s care. We’re proud that 387 Vets has been RCVS-accredited since 2009, and we particularly love the scheme for its holistic approach to practice review. | Wellcare World | WHO

We’re proud that 387 Vets has been RCVS-accredited since 2009, and we particularly love the scheme for its holistic approach to practice review.

RCVS PSS assessments take place every four years and include upload of a significant bank of requested evidence onto an assessment portal followed by an on-site visit by an RCVS assessor to see evidence in practice and to speak with team.

In her feedback report, our assessor identified many areas of best practice, but made special reference to our practice culture, commenting that, “to see a practice so invested in their team is truly inspiring.” She continued that, “staff wellbeing and happiness is at the heart of this practice,” and praised the fact that, “the whole team are invested in maximising their skills, not only for their own development, but also for the development of the business.”

We believe that investing in team wellbeing and fulfilment plays a huge part in our practice identity and success. To have this recognised by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons feels amazing.

This is 8 month old Shih Tzu Milo who managed to get a grass seed very painfully lodged under his third eyelid. You can see the offending awn in poor Milo’s eye. We were able to very gently tease the seed out and have given Milo eye drops to sooth the trauma site. Milo was a very brave boy! See the spikey grass seed below!

It’s worth giving dogs a quick groom on return from summer dogs walks to remove any loose seeds that may subsequently cause issues. This will stop them potentially reseeding in your garden too. As summer is the height of parasite season, it’s also a great opportunity to give your pet a quick once over for any nasty creepy crawlies that may have targeted your pet as a tasty host!

Special treats for Archie

Special treats for Archie

Archie Smith pup 2 954x1024 1 | Special treats for Archie | This is beautiful Archie who came to see us with cystitis. On carrying out tests, we discovered crystals in poor Archie’s urine. If left untreated, these crystals can turn into bladder stones which, as well as being painful, can inhibit and even stop the ability to urinate and can lead to surgery, so it’s really important to take action. | Wellcare World | WHO

If left untreated, these crystals can turn into bladder stones which, as well as being painful, can inhibit and even stop the ability to urinate and can lead to surgery, so it’s really important to take action.

Archie went onto a special Hills prescription diet that’s specially designed to help dissolve these crystals to prevent them turning into something bigger and nastier.

It’s essential to be strict and resist the temptation to give your four legged friend little ‘extras’ here and there for the special diet to work. With this in mind, Archie’s mum has created some cookies from Archie’s kibble for between meal treats. Here are the results!
