We are delighted to report that we have passed our 2025 Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) Practice Standards Scheme Assessment. The RCVS are the regulatory body for veterinary surgeons and registered veterinary nurses in the UK. Whilst their Practice Standards Scheme (PSS) is voluntary, the comprehensive framework helps drive improvement and makes practices accountable for service standards. Practices displaying the RCVS logo meet rigorous RCVS-set standards, giving owners peace of mind around their pet’s care. We’re proud that 387 Vets has been RCVS-accredited since 2009, and we particularly love the scheme for its holistic approach to practice review.
RCVS PSS assessments take place every four years and include upload of a significant bank of requested evidence onto an assessment portal followed by an on-site visit by an RCVS assessor to see evidence in practice and to speak with team.
In her feedback report, our assessor identified many areas of best practice, but made special reference to our practice culture, commenting that, “to see a practice so invested in their team is truly inspiring.” She continued that, “staff wellbeing and happiness is at the heart of this practice,” and praised the fact that, “the whole team are invested in maximising their skills, not only for their own development, but also for the development of the business.”
We believe that investing in team wellbeing and fulfilment plays a huge part in our practice identity and success. To have this recognised by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons feels amazing.

Summer time is fantastic for long days and lovely dry dog walks but do be mindful that if walking through meadows or other areas with long grass that it’s prime grass seed season. Grass awns are barbed and can easily become lodged in your pet’s fur and painfully hook into their skin. Common problem areas are ears and between the toes, but we’ve removed awns from noses, cheeks and even necks!
This is 8 month old Shih Tzu Milo who managed to get a grass seed very painfully lodged under his third eyelid. You can see the offending awn in poor Milo’s eye. We were able to very gently tease the seed out and have given Milo eye drops to sooth the trauma site. Milo was a very brave boy! See the spikey grass seed below!
It’s worth giving dogs a quick groom on return from summer dogs walks to remove any loose seeds that may subsequently cause issues. This will stop them potentially reseeding in your garden too. As summer is the height of parasite season, it’s also a great opportunity to give your pet a quick once over for any nasty creepy crawlies that may have targeted your pet as a tasty host!

Rabbit Awareness Week (RAW) is celebrated annually in order to promote the health and welfare of pet rabbits and to raise awareness about the unique needs of one of the UK’s favourite pets.
RAW runs from 23rd – 27th June and the focus for 2025 is ‘Happy Hoppy Homes.’ Did you know that rabbit homes should have a minimum footprint of 3m x 2m so that bunnies can hop and run, and that they should be 1m in height so they fully stretch upright without their ears touching the roof.
Introducing different levels in a bunny home is great for enrichment and for separating feeding, resting and exercise spaces. Get creative with tunnels to maximise bunny fun! And don’t forget lots of fresh straw bedding so bunnies can snuggle and keep cosy.
Rabbits love to play, and toys enable them to exhibit natural behaviours like digging, jumping and chewing. You can stuff cardboard tubes with hay and healthy treats as engagement activity, provide a digging box filled with shredded paper and include wickers toys that rabbits can toss and chew. Remember to include plenty of hiding places, which could even be cardboard boxes which rabbits can chew too!
Rabbits are sociable soles and are happiest with another rabbit companion, but make sure they are neutered! Ask us for tips on introducing a new friend to your rabbit’s home as this needs to be carefully managed for optimum results.
The Rabbit Awareness Action Group have heaps more great advice on helping rabbit owners to create a ‘Happy Hoppy Home’. Say hello to these beautiful bunnies who were in practice with us yesterday for neutering. The three brothers Alfalfa, Angel and Winter are absolutely stunning. Alfalfa is easy to recognises as he has one upright ear and one floppy ear. This is commonly known as helicopter ears. What a great term!
Rabbits can reach puberty at a very young age, so we recommend neutering males at around three months old and females at around five months old to prevent any baby surprises if you are keeping a male and a female together. Neutering has lots of other advantages too as it can stop territorial urine and faeces marking, reduces aggression, helps with companion compatibility and even has health benefits: the RSPCA reports that around 80 percent of unneutered females develop uterine cancer after the age of three which usually proves to be fatal.
The Rabbit Welfare and Fund charity offers great advice for first time and long-standing rabbit owners on how to help pet rabbits stay happy and healthy. Check out their website for best bunny husbandry as well as life stage and seasonal health advice.
