Lap spay stunner

IMG 3463 | Lap spay stunner | A big shout out to one of our largest breed laparoscopic spays (key hole spays) to date! This is Great Dane Dottie, who is two years old, 52kg and absolutely stunning. Lap spays are a great option for big breeds as, given their considerable size, they are potentially more challenging to nurse at home. Lap spay patients tend to be back to normal routine within days of surgery, so the procedure is a great option for bouncy dogs too! | Wellcare World | surgery

With laparoscopic spays, two small incisions are made and a scope and instruments are then inserted into the lower abdomen through ports. A camera attached to the scope allows the surgeon to direct the instruments to locate and surgically remove the ovaries. Traditional spays require a bigger wound site as the surgeon works from this to locate the uterus and ovaries, both of which are then removed. Understandably, with more surgical intervention, recovery is longer and more pain relief is often required to keep pets comfortable immediately post-op.

We’re looking forward to seeing Dottie for her post op check and to seeing how she’s been getting on!

Keyhole spay for Honey

Honey looks a real honey in this photo with her teddy and blanket! The one year one cockerpoo was in with us last week to be neutered using keyhole surgery.

Keyhole spays involve making two very small wounds in the patient’s abdomen after which the internal surgical area is inflated to enable access. Once the ovaries are sourced, they are detached using fine instruments and cameras, and vessel-sealing technology closes the wounds. The detached ovaries are then removed and the external wounds are repaired. Traditional spays are much more invasive as they involve removing the ovaries and uterus through a larger entry point, and much more stretching and tearing of tissues during surgery to be able to free up the required anatomy. Inevitably, in traditional spays, post-op recovery time is longer and more pain management is required. Keyhole patients can return to full exercise within 48 hours!

We saw Honey back at the end of the week. She was doing brilliantly and, by now, should be back to her normal exercise routine!

Special treats for Archie

Special treats for Archie

Archie Smith pup 2 954x1024 1 | Special treats for Archie | This is beautiful Archie who came to see us with cystitis. On carrying out tests, we discovered crystals in poor Archie’s urine. If left untreated, these crystals can turn into bladder stones which, as well as being painful, can inhibit and even stop the ability to urinate and can lead to surgery, so it’s really important to take action. | Wellcare World | surgery

If left untreated, these crystals can turn into bladder stones which, as well as being painful, can inhibit and even stop the ability to urinate and can lead to surgery, so it’s really important to take action.

Archie went onto a special Hills prescription diet that’s specially designed to help dissolve these crystals to prevent them turning into something bigger and nastier.

It’s essential to be strict and resist the temptation to give your four legged friend little ‘extras’ here and there for the special diet to work. With this in mind, Archie’s mum has created some cookies from Archie’s kibble for between meal treats. Here are the results!

Some of you may remember that International Cat Care came to do some photography and filming last year in our interconnecting West Midlands Cat Clinic. The fruits of their labour are now live! Working in conjunction with Ceva who produce Feliway, the charity has launched a series of training videos to help veterinary professionals reduce stress and improve health outcomes in feline patients. You can imagine Rachael and Emma’s delight on seeing at congress that the West Midlands Cat Clinic spotlights in the promotional literature for the new online cat handling training series! Rachael herself and our Clinical Director Hamish in our West Midlands Cat Clinic have top billing in their literature! We’re super excited that our cat clinic is being recognised on the world stage!

Welcome!

Rachael L WMCC | Welcome! | This is our new RVN Rachael during her cat clinic nursing consults this morning giving beautiful Ghost a cuddle. Rachael joined us at the beginning of March (with the expansion of our premises, we’ve been expanding our team too!) and takes our qualified nursing team to a new total of 12. Rachael started her nursing journey in 2012, and on qualifying as a Registered Veterinary Nurse in 2017, moved to the Midlands where she has been working in small animal first opinion practice since. In addition to her nursing duties and being sole charge nurse at branch surgery level, Rachael helped inspire vet team members of the future in previous posts, as a student nurse clinical coach and work experience coordinator. Whilst she enjoys all elements of her role, she has a particular passion for feline nursing, recently completing an ISFM Certificate in Feline Nursing with distinction and helping her previous practice become a silver-accredited Cat Friendly Clinic. We’re delighted to welcome Rachael to the team and know she will love meeting you, your feline friends and canine pals too! | Wellcare World | surgery
