This is Irish Wolfhound Gillighan who came in to see us having caught his tail in a van door. Mum bandaged him up and brought him straight down to see us for treatment. As a show dog, everyone was keen to try and preserve his full tail so that he would remain eligible to compete.
Tail wounds can struggle to heal: not only do dog tails have limited protective tissue, but they are in constant use as part of a dog’s mode of expression, which often means lots of wagging! Gillighan’s tail didn’t heal as we had hoped so had to surgically remove the damaged tip.
The three year old is now all better, the op site has healed, his fur has grown back and, excitingly, his tail remains long enough for him to continue to show. You can imagine our delight to receive a WhatsApp message from Gillighan’s owner last week to tell us he’d won silver in his show category. What a stunning superstar!

As an accredited Dog Friendly Clinic with Dogs Trust and The British Veterinary Behaviour Association, we’re super keen to help make in-patient visits as stress-minimal as possible. We phone owners ahead of patient admit to go through a care plan which includes questions about pet preferences and behaviours so that we can adapt care in practice accordingly. We ask that pets bring items from home with them for comfort and the familiar smell of home. A favourite blanket and teddy is perfect. We’ll also ask if owners can provide a portion of their dog’s favourite food for post procedure. Whilst we’re happy to provide food, we find pets often prefer what they and their tummy are used to. We have raised water bowls for bigger breeds and older pets.
In kennels, we make sure patient spaces are comfy and cosy. We drape towels over the front half of the kennel door too. Whist no kennel faces any other, this gives patients an extra sense of security if they want to tuck themselves away. We have three walk-in kennels on ward in addition to a host of other kennels to accommodate larger breeds, as well as a completely separate walk-in isolation kennel which we use for especially anxious patients, as well as medical cases warranting separation. We play gentle soothing music on ward and we keep treats and licki mats to hand for encouragement where some form of food is allowed.
We have a secure, enclosed toileting area directly off kennels. We have a patch of astro turf in our run for dogs who prefer to toilet on grass. If dogs like to potter before toileting, no problem. If they like company, that’s no problem too! We have dedicated kennels nurses specifically responsible for in-patient care and comfort.
Here are gorgeous Bez and Jasper beautifully modelling a few of our Dog Friendly Clinic inpatient initiatives. Both brought their teddies who were also given a health check during their stay!

We are delighted to report that we have passed our 2025 Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) Practice Standards Scheme Assessment. The RCVS are the regulatory body for veterinary surgeons and registered veterinary nurses in the UK. Whilst their Practice Standards Scheme (PSS) is voluntary, the comprehensive framework helps drive improvement and makes practices accountable for service standards. Practices displaying the RCVS logo meet rigorous RCVS-set standards, giving owners peace of mind around their pet’s care. We’re proud that 387 Vets has been RCVS-accredited since 2009, and we particularly love the scheme for its holistic approach to practice review.
RCVS PSS assessments take place every four years and include upload of a significant bank of requested evidence onto an assessment portal followed by an on-site visit by an RCVS assessor to see evidence in practice and to speak with team.
In her feedback report, our assessor identified many areas of best practice, but made special reference to our practice culture, commenting that, “to see a practice so invested in their team is truly inspiring.” She continued that, “staff wellbeing and happiness is at the heart of this practice,” and praised the fact that, “the whole team are invested in maximising their skills, not only for their own development, but also for the development of the business.”
We believe that investing in team wellbeing and fulfilment plays a huge part in our practice identity and success. To have this recognised by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons feels amazing.

Beautiful Lyra first came to see our Lead Nurse Cody at a nutrition clinic to see if her skin problems were caused by an allergic reaction to something in her food. As part of the process, Cody also discussed Lyra’s body condition score as she was a little overweight and Lyra started on a weight management programme. Last week, Lyra reached her target weight. You can see how well she’s done in the progress chart that mum’s holding up behind her. Brilliant job Lyra. You look fabulous!

If you are worried your pet may be carrying extra weight, do give us a call on 01922 411755 and book in for a weight check with one of our qualified nursing team. If your pet does need to go onto a weight management programme, you’ll receive 1-1 support with a weight-management trained qualified vet nurse, including a lifestyle review, progressive nutrition, treat and exercise advice, your pet’s own log book and progress chart and photos and measurements at the beginning and end of the programme so you can see the difference!
