A massive shout out to our amazing reception team – Emma, Clare, Beth, Angie and Nikki – this Veterinary Receptionist Appreciation Week! Being a veterinary receptionist is a hugely diverse and busy role. As well as being our front of house representatives and the first touch point for clients contacting 387 Vets and the West Midlands Cat Clinic, our reception team triage cases to ensure you get the right care when you need it, book appointments, process payments, answer queries, dispense medications, transfer histories, liaise with clinical team, respond to WhatsApp messages, follow up test results, clean the reception, waiting and consult areas, ensure waiting room cat carrier covers, dog mats and treat jars are available and well stocked, that supportive literature is available in the waiting room, that client packs are made up … the list goes on! Being able to multitask is essential as is thriving on being busy and being passionate about the job. As well as being customer-facing and customer focused, our reception team are an invaluable support to the rest of our team and are integral to the success of the practice.
Reception team love meeting pets and people. They are helpful, compassionate, supportive, love seeing your pets as they move through various life stages and are always partial to a canine cuddle and a feline hello! Thank you Emma, Clare, Beth, Angie and Nikki for all you do!

We’re excited to welcome ultrasonographer Mark Overend into practice today to run 1-1 ultrasound training sessions with our vets. A range of team pets have popped into practice to help us out! Here is Olga carrying out her training session with her own dog Fendi. Well done Fendi for being such a good girl and for helping mum to practise her skills!

20th February is Love Your Pet Day and a brilliant reason to set aside extra time to lavish love and attention on your pet! Pets bring us so much joy and make life richer. They are our companions, a listening non-judgmental friend, are pleased to see us, make us laugh, bring comfort in times of sadness or difficulty, make us more active, give us purpose and have a special place in our hearts.
What makes your pet particularly happy? Whether it’s being pampered, going out and about on a walk, interactive play, or snuggling up next to you, see if you can actively schedule in more of what they love today to show your pet how much you care!

With the second week in February traditionally recognising National Tooth Ache Day, it’s important to remember that, just like us, our furry friends can get tooth ache too! If you notice your pet has smelly breath or is drooling, chewing on one side of their mouth, pawing at their mouth, eating more slowly or choosing to eat wet food over dry biscuit, it could be that they are suffering from some kind of dental or oral issue. There are many causes of dental and periodontal pain. These can include inflamed gums, tooth decay, broken or fractured teeth, damaged enamel, painful growths and, in cats, resorptive lesions, where teeth decay from the root upwards. Ouch! If you notice any of these symptoms, please do book your pet in for a dental examination with a vet as it’s likely your pet is in significant discomfort.
Even if there are no obvious indications of a problem, regular pet dental health check ups are really important. Did you know periodontal disease (inflammation and infection of the tissues supporting the teeth) is one of the most common health issues in pets? And that pets can be really good at hiding pain?
We ideally recommend 3-6 monthly checks for pets and at very least, once a year. Give us a call on 01922 411755 to arrange your pet’s dental check up. Get in touch too to book in for advice on oral hygiene routines to keep dental and periodontal disease at bay.

A huge thank you to everyone who contributed to our ‘Give a Pet a Christmas Dinner’ campaign which ran throughout December. We received a huge number of donations to help charities support dogs and cats in local shelters waiting for their forever homes. You donated an incredible 673 tins, sachets and trays of wet food, just shy of 40kg of dry food, 90 packets of treats and nearly 100 pet toys, not to mention stacks of pet accessories including pet beds, blankets, towels, leads, harnesses, bowls, brushes, puppy pads and more!
Cat donations have been shared between 4 local cat charities. These are the doggy donations which were dropped off at Birmingham Dogs Home in Coven at the beginning of this week. There were so many that they filled the empty collection bin in the foyer and we had to stack the rest of the donations at the sides!
Pet charities rely on donations like these to undertake the great work they do looking after homeless pets in need. They are hugely grateful for your amazing kindness and generosity.
